New mural at Farmers Market
In celebration of its 170th year of operation, the St. Paul Farmers Market at 290 5th St. E. has commissioned a mural from local wildlife artist Daniel Renn Pierce. It features a river flowing between two birch poles, with native animals enjoying their natural habitat. The artwork signifies St. Paul’s relationship to the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers and surrounds two plaques. One commemorates the Lowertown district and its history of being a commercial distribution center for goods shipped to and from St. Paul, and the other recognizes the year the market was renovated in 2004.
A mural unveiling ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 29. The event will feature the chance to meet the artist, giveaways and family friendly fun.
The St. Paul Farmers Market dates to 1853 when French-Canadian Fur Trapper Vital Guerin spearheaded the effort to build Minnesota’s first public farmers market. Established in 1854 by the St. Paul Growers’ Association, it includes fresh produce, meat and other wares of local growers, all of whom are within 100 miles of St. Paul. Today, The St. Paul Farmers Market is the longest-running farmers market in the state and it operates 16 satellite markets in the metro area, running six days a week.
