Break out your flannel shirts, wool jackets and chopper mittens because winter has returned and it’s time to go outside and enjoy it. South St. Paul Parks and Recreation is hosting its annual Flannel Fest beginning January 19. From flapjacks to ice skating to sampling delicious hotdish delights, there’s something the entire family can enjoy. In fact, not all activities require you to bundle up and brave the cold. Here’s what’s on tap.

Flapjacks and Flannels,
9-11:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 19 at Croatian Hall, 445 2nd Ave. S. Enjoy a meal of flapjacks, eggs and sausage. Come dressed in your flannels to make the event extra festive. $10 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds benefit scholarships for Parks and Recreation youth programs.

Forager Medallion Hunt, Monday, Jan. 20-25. The search begins at noon, Monday, Jan. 20 when the first clue is released on the city’s Facebook page. Clues will be released at noon daily through January 25, or until the medallion is found.

Hotdish Showdown, 5-6:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24 at Croatian Hall, 445 2nd Ave. S. Few things are more comforting on a cold winter’s night than a warm hotdish. If you have a family favorite that you think bests all others, enter it into the Hotdish Showdown. The public is invited to sample the selections and cast their vote. Tasting/judging begins at 5 p.m. and the winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. To enter the contest or for more information, contact Colin at ctrudgeon@southstpaul.org.

Starlight Skate & Sled, 5-7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25 at Jefferson Park, 125 21st Ave. N. Enjoy whooshing down the city’s popular sledding hill, spinning around the park’s ice rink, or try your hand at ice bowling. South St. Paul police will join the fun and serve hot cocoa.

Babe’s Boot Hockey Tournament, 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25 at Jefferson Park, 125 21st Ave. N. While South St. Paul is synonymous with hockey, this tournament requires no blades. Teams are needed to square-off for a friendly competition of adult boot hockey. To enter the tournament or for more information, contact Colin at ctrudgeon@southstpaul.org. The team fee is $100. Free to watch.

Snowshoe Candlelight NIGHT! – Winter fun continues Wednesday, Feb. 5 with the Candlelight Snowshoe hike at Kaposia Park, starting at 5 p.m. The trails will be illuminated by candlelight for a serene walk through the woods. Snowshoe rentals will be available for kids and adults, although they are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you don’t have snowshoes, you can still hike the trails. The event is free. Food trucks will offer hot food and beverages for purchase.
